SOCCER ROUNDUP : Goal in Overtime Gives Edison 1-0 Victory, Angers Ocean View Coach

It came after 95 minutes of grueling soccer, and it saved Edison High School’s playoff hopes.

Officially, it was a game-winning goal in overtime for Matt Rellera and a 1-0 Sunset League victory for Edison.

But in the eyes of Ocean View Coach Paul Kollar, it was an official’s whistle that decided the game.

“I’m mad because that ball never went in the cage,” Kollar said. “The ball hit the crossbar, came down and bounced out of the goal toward the playing field.”

Edison’s Matt Juric put his centering pass 10 yards in front of the Ocean View net, where a crowd of players converged on the ball, and Rellera deflected it in.

“The referee was 40 to 50 yards away,” Kollar said. “How can he see if that ball crossed the goal line when you can barely see the goal line from 20 yards away?

“To make a call like that you have to be 100% sure and I’m ticked because the official decided the game, not the boys.”

Edison Coach Mike DiGiovanni said: “Lately we’ve been playing hard and getting unlucky, so I’ll take this one. At least this win gets us to 2-4 in league and keeps our playoff hopes alive.”

Ocean View is 12-5-2, 2-3.
