COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Iowa Loses Another Big Ten Road Game, 91-79

With Indiana and Ohio State in the Big Ten Conference, Iowa already had a long road to travel for a chance at the conference championship.

And if the Hawkeyes keep performing the way they are in Big Ten road games, they can all but forget about the title.

Wisconsin was the inhospitable host Thursday night, defeating the No. 24 Hawkeyes, 91-79, at Madison, Wis.

It was the 14th consecutive conference road loss for Iowa, which is 13-4 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten.

The Hawkeyes were behind, 42-27, at halftime and trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half.

Tim Locum scored 25 points and John Ellenson added 21 for Wisconsin (8-6, 2-2), which made 11 three-point shots and beat the Hawkeyes for the fourth consecutive time.

No. 18 Southern Mississippi 64, Tulane 57--Clarence Weatherspoon scored six of his 16 points during a late surge that helped the Golden Eagles (9-1, 4-0) win a Metro Conference game at Hattiesburg, Miss.

Michael Christian scored 16 points for Tulane (7-7, 2-3).

No. 23 Utah 90, Wyoming 83--Josh Grant scored 23 points at Laramie, Wyo., as the Utes (16-1, 5-0) extended their winning streak to 13 games and took sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference.

Maurice Alexander scored 32 points for Wyoming (13-3, 3-1).

MIDWEST

Steve Smith scored 35 points, including two free throws with six seconds left, as Michigan State (11-4, 4-1) beat Illinois, 71-68, in a Big Ten game at Champaign, Ill. Michigan State overcame a 14-point deficit early in the second half. Rennie Clemons scored 17 points for Illinois (12-5, 2-2). . . . Arriel McDonald scored 10 of his 12 points in the final 2:01 to lead Minnesota (9-5, 2-2) to a 59-56 Big Ten victory over Purdue (10-5, 2-3) at Minneapolis.

Michigan won its first Big Ten game, beating Northwestern, 79-68, at Ann Arbor, Mich. Demetrius Calip scored 22 points for Michigan (8-7, 1-4). Northwestern (5-9, 0-5) lost its 40th consecutive conference road game. . . . Notre Dame (7-9), playing its first game since LaPhonso Ellis was ruled academically ineligible, beat Marquette, 80-73, at South Bend, Ind. Damon Key scored 26 points for Marquette (4-9).

SOUTH

New Orleans (14-2, 4-0) won its 14th consecutive game as Tank Collins scored 18 points in a 76-66 American South victory over Lamar (12-5, 2-1) at New Orleans.

WEST

Freshman Shawn Bradley scored 25 points, had 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots to lead Brigham Young (10-8, 4-1) to a 72-55 victory over Colorado State (8-7, 1-4) in a Western Athletic Conference game at Ft. Collins, Colo. . . . San Diego State (7-8, 2-3) held New Mexico (11-6, 1-4) to two points in the final five minutes of a 52-51 WAC victory at San Diego. . . . Rhea Taylor scored 18 points to lead Santa Clara to an 86-59 West Coast Conference victory over USF at Santa Clara. Santa Clara (12-6, 3-1), USF (10-7, 3-1) and the University of San Diego are tied for first in the West Coast Conference. . . . A dozen anti-war protesters briefly delayed the start of a nationally televised game between Idaho and Montana by lying on the court at Missoula, Mont.
