SIDELINES : Va. Tops AP Women’s Cage Poll
Virginia got near unanimous support in the Associated Press women’s basketball poll, retaining the top spot for the second week. The Lady Cavaliers (16-1) have been ranked No. 1 in the poll for nine of 10 weeks this season.
But things have been less stable for the rest of the top 10. The most notable shockers were to UNLV and Rutgers.
UNLV fell from fifth to 12th after having its perfect record spoiled at then-No. 19 Texas, 89-67. UNLV then lost again at Cal State Fullerton, 86-80, Saturday night, dropping the Rebels’ record to 14-2.
Rutgers (13-1), which had knocked Penn State from its No. 1 position a week ago, had its own unbeaten streak ended by Holy Cross, 78-67, on Saturday. The Lady Knights, who earlier had beaten West Virginia at home, fell from sixth to ninth.
Penn State (13-1), the only team to beat Virginia this year, and North Carolina State (14-2) each moved up a spot to second and third, respectively.
Following in the top 10 were Tennessee, Georgia, Purdue, Auburn, Stanford, Rutgers and LSU. Cal State Long Beach is ranked 24th.
