COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : No. 6 Syracuse Beats No. 21 Georgetown

For so long, Syracuse couldn’t win at the Capital Centre in Landover, Md. Now the Orangemen have a winning streak there.

Sixth-ranked Syracuse made a season-high eight three-point shots Monday night and scored a 58-56 victory over No. 21 Georgetown despite going scoreless the last 3:19.

The Orangemen lost the first nine games they played at the Hoyas’ home court, but have won the last two.

The Orangemen, 17-2 overall, 5-2 in the Big East Conference, matched their season high with seven three-pointers in the first half, then found the points harder to come by against Georgetown, which holds opponents to 35% shooting.

Mike Hopkins hit a three-pointer with 3:19 left to give the Syracuse a 58-52 lead before the Orangemen went cold.

Charles Harrison made two free throws for Georgetown (11-5, 3-3) with 2:59 remaining and Ronny Thompson hit a long jumper to bring the Hoyas to within two with 57 seconds left.

Georgetown’s Dikembe Mutombo, who had nine points and 18 rebounds, couldn’t convert two lob passes, the second from out of bounds with .2 seconds left.

No. 2 Arkansas 109, Florida State 92--Todd Day scored 30 points and the Razorbacks extended their winning streak to 15 games by beating the Seminoles at Tallahassee, Fla.

The Razorbacks (18-1) had a 37-20 lead midway through the first half, but the Seminoles (9-6) pulled to within 62-57 at halftime as Chuck Graham scored 14 points for Florida State.

Arkansas scored the first five points of the second half and kept pulling away, holding Graham scoreless after halftime.

Douglas Edwards had 24 points for Florida State (9-6).

Tennessee Chattanooga 76, No. 12 East Tennessee State 74--LaVert Threats sank two free throws with four seconds left at Chattanooga, Tenn., and the Moccasins ended the Buccaneers’ 13-game winning streak.

The victory moved Tennessee-Chattanooga (12-6, 5-0) into the Southern Conference lead.

East Tennessee State (14-2, 4-1) was setting up for a final shot when Rodney English threw the ball away with 11 seconds left.

No. 15 Southern Mississippi 88, Texas Pan American 72--Darrin Chancellor had 23 points as the Golden Eagles (11-1) won their ninth consecutive game by beating the Broncs at Hattiesburg, Miss.

No. 18 Virginia 71, Davidson 47--Anthony Oliver scored 16 points and the Cavaliers (12-4) used a 17-0 second-half run to pull away from the Wildcats at Charlottesville, Va. REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS MIDWEST

Chad Gallagher had 29 points and 15 rebounds, and Bob Harstad had 26 points and 13 rebounds as Creighton (9-6, 4-3) beat Bradley, 76-68, in a Missouri Valley Conference game at Peoria, Ill. SOUTH

Rodney Monroe scored 23 points and Chris Corchiani set Atlantic Coast Conference records for assists and steals in a career as North Carolina State (9-4) beat Marquette, 89-76, at Raleigh, N.C. Trevor Powell had 20 points for Marquette (5-10). . . . Popeye Jones had 26 points and 20 rebounds to lead Murray State (14-7, 3-1) to an 86-74 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Tennessee Tech (9-9, 4-1).
