As many as 200 people were evacuated Thursday evening from an office building after a fire fueled by cardboard and newspapers was started in a stairwell, authorities said.

An investigation was under way into what caused the fire, and arson has not been ruled out, a fire dispatcher said.

It was not immediately known how much damage was caused by the blaze at the Cal Fed Building, 600 N. Euclid St. However, there were no injuries in the fire, which was reported at 6:19 p.m.

A variety of businesses share the building, including law and real estate offices. The dispatcher said most of the evacuees were on the third floor, where smoke was reported.
