BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Buena Girls Turn Tables on Ventura

The Buena High girls’ basketball team exacted a bit of revenge Thursday night, defeating host Ventura, 55-47, in a key Channel League game.

Although Buena (16-2, 8-1 in league play) had beaten Ventura twice in the preseason, the Bulldogs’ only loss in league play was against the Cougars.

But Lianne Ishikawa scored 15 points and handed out seven assists and Mia Palkie scored 15 points and had nine rebounds as Buena moved back into a tie for first place with Ventura (14-3, 8-1).

Cori Herman scored a game-high 20 points for Ventura, which has lost only to Buena this season.

In other girls’ games:

Channel Islands 70, Simi Valley 45--Forward Candis Carper scored 22 points and center Sal Tauau added 20 to lead Channel Islands (7-2 in league play) to the Marmonte League win at Simi Valley. Laura Brown had a team-high 16 points for Simi Valley (10-9, 4-5).

St. Bonaventure 57, Oak Park 51--Joana Ziuraitis scored a game-high 24 points and had 13 rebounds and teammate Denice Babby added 16 points for host St. Bonaventure (10-7, 5-1) in a Tri-Valley League game.

Thousand Oaks 77, Camarillo 44--Michelle Palmisano scored 20 points and Erin Clarke came off the bench to add 14 in the Lancers’ Marmonte League victory at Thousand Oaks.

The Lancers (20-1, 9-0) had a 39-12 lead at halftime, with Palmisano’s individual scoring total equaling that of Camarillo (6-11, 3-6). It was the 18th consecutive win for Thousand Oaks, which has not lost at home this season.

BOYS

Crespi 97, St. Bernard 93--Brett McGovern scored a career-high 29 points to lead Crespi in a Mission League game at St. Bernard.

Crespi led by 15 points after three quarters, but a St. Bernard rally that included four three-point baskets tied the score, 93-93, with 24 seconds left. Free throws by Charles Aghajanian and John Curtain (27 points) gave the Celts (8-12, 2-6) the victory.

Rasaan Hall added 24 points and 10 rebounds for Crespi.

Highland Hall 63, West L.A. Baptist 40--Ed Anastas had 17 points and 10 rebounds and John Klejnot had 15 points, six blocks and 13 rebounds to pace host Highland Hall (8-7, 5-3) in a Westside League game.

MEN

Cal Baptist 78, Cal Lutheran 76--Neil Zwart scored on a follow shot with one second remaining to lead host Cal Baptist in an NAIA District 3 game at Riverside.

Cal Lutheran’s Hank Hou made two free throws with 12 seconds left to tie the score, 76-76, but Zwart scored inside after teammate Warren Daniels missed a driving layup.

Jeff deLaveaga scored a game-high 29 points for Cal Lutheran (7-9), which embarked on a 25-6 run in the second half after trailing, 47-30, at intermission.

WOMEN

Christ College Irvine 79, The Master’s 60--Sandy Cumming and Susie Sparks each scored 13 points for Master’s in an NAIA District 3 loss at home. Master’s (3-17, 1-4) committed 28 turnovers and shot only 39% from the field.

Cal Lutheran 91, Azusa Pacific 75--Dani Elton scored a career-high 29 points for Cal Lutheran in the NAIA District 3 game.

Elton made 21 of 23 free throws and teammate Kristen Smith added 24 points for Cal Lutheran.
