SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : Keeping Eyes on Other Bouncing Balls

There’s more on this weekend’s sports agenda than just Super Bowl XXV.

ABC (Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42) leads up to Sunday’s game between the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants with the final nine holes of golf’s Senior Skins Game from Hawaii at 10:30 a.m., and a two-hour pregame show at 1 p.m. The Super Bowl telecast begins at 3 p.m., with the kickoff scheduled at 3:18 p.m.

NBC (Channels 4, 36 and 39) counters with the season’s first installment of the NBA’s most storied rivalry, the Lakers against the Boston Celtics at 9:30 a.m. The World Professional Figure Skating Championships follows at noon.

CBS (Channels 2 and 8) offers a college basketball double-header and golf. No. 21 Georgetown visits No. 17 Pittsburgh at 9 a.m. and No. 7 North Carolina plays host to Georgia Tech at 11 a.m. The final round of the Phoenix Open airs at 1 p.m.

Today’s sports programming includes plenty of college basketball, with NBA, tennis and golf action mixed in.

Top college basketball games include No. 1 Nevada Las Vegas against Louisville (10 a.m., Channels 2 and 8); No. 18 Virginia at Notre Dame (1 p.m., Channels 4, 36 and 39); the slumping No. 11 UCLA Bruins visit Oregon (1 p.m., Channel 63); No. 5 Arizona faces California (3 p.m., Channel 2), and a Big West Conference game matches No. 23 New Mexico State and Utah State (6 p.m., SportsChannel).

In the NBA, the Clippers, seemingly headed for an NBA-record 15th consecutive non-playoff season, play host to the Milwaukee Bucks at 7:30 p.m. on Prime Ticket.

Ivan Lendl goes for his third consecutive Australian Open tennis title at 7 p.m. on ESPN against Boris Becker of West Germany.

Golf fans will have two tournaments to choose from: third round coverage of the Phoenix Open at 1 p.m. on Channels 2 and 8, and front-nine play of the Senior Skins Game starts at 1:30 p.m. on Channels 7, 3 and 42, 12:30 p.m. on Channel 10.
