World IN BRIEF : NEW ZEALAND : No One Injured in Two Big Quakes

Two earthquakes, measuring 6 and 6.1, hit New Zealand’s South Island, causing cracks in a main highway and toppling chimneys. There were no reports of injuries. The first quake was centered almost under the town of Westport, about 150 miles southwest of Wellington. The other struck five hours later about nine miles away. Experts said that, although New Zealand has about 150 earthquakes a year, few measure greater than 5.
