Pomona rolled to easy victories over Chapman and Cal State Dominguez Hills last week. Pomona defeated Chapman, 78-57, and Dominguez Hills, 56-42.

Cal State L.A. struggled in nonconference play, but has improved in CCAA play. The Golden Eagles, who are coming off a 66-65 victory last week over San Luis Obispo, have been led by forwards Lori Thompson and Tina Slatinsky.

Thompson is a former standout at Monrovia High.

Bronco senior forward Stephanie Coons is averaging a CCAA-leading 16.3 points and a team-leading 7.6 rebounds.

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team, which moved into sole possession of first place in the CCAA last week with two victories, plays perennial power UC Riverside in a home-and-home series Friday and Saturday.

The Broncos, 12-8 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA, visit Riverside at 7:30 p.m. Friday. They play host to the Highlanders at 8 p.m. Saturday at Kellogg Gym. Riverside, ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Division II last week, is 15-4 and 3-2.

Pomona has been sparked by the all-around play of senior forward Terry Ross, who is the CCAA scoring leader at 23.4 points. He also leads the team in rebounding with a 9.0 average. With 31 points in Pomona’s 62-58 victory over Chapman last week, Ross moved into fourth place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 944 points.

Riverside, which has reached the Division II playoffs the past two seasons, is led by forward Anthony Jenkins and guard Gene Altamirano. Jenkins, a transfer from the University of Washington, averages 14.9 points and Altamirano 13.6.
