A toddler was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday night after her mother backed the family pickup truck down the driveway of the family home in Walnut Park and ran over her, authorities said.

The 3-year-old girl, who suffered “extremely serious, life-threatening injuries,” was placed on a life-support system after emergency room treatment at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, said Lt. Dave Martinez of the sheriff’s Firestone station.

The accident in the 8700 block of Plevka Avenue was reported on the 911 line at about 6:45 p.m.

Two deputies patrolling nearby responded and determined that the girl’s “massive . . . very traumatic” injuries could not wait for an ambulance, Martinez said.

The officers put the girl in their patrol car and, after calling for fellow deputies to block intersections, rushed her to the hospital.

While one deputy drove, the other administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid to the toddler during the four-mile, three-minute trip to the hospital, Martinez said.

A second sheriff’s unit soon followed with the mother, 29-year-old Mileana Roque.

“The mother was in shock, obviously, when she discovered what happened,” Martinez said.
