Police have arrested a 68-year-old Long Beach man suspected of repeatedly molesting a 12-year-old girl whom he befriended, authorities said Friday.

Robert D. Stanfield was arrested Wednesday at his store on Seal Beach Boulevard and was being held Friday in lieu of $100,000 bail in the Orange County Jail on 11 felony counts of child molestation, Seal Beach Police Detective Charlie Castagna said.

The crimes occurred one weekend last December when the girl was staying at Stanfield’s home, Castagna wrote in an affidavit for a search warrant filed in the case.

That weekend turned into a nightmare for the girl, police said. After first renting pornographic videos, police allege, Stanfield took her to a Long Beach motel, molested her during the night and the next day at a drive-in movie theater. Then he took her to see a Christmas drama at the Crystal Cathedral before taking her back to his house, according to the affidavit.

Detectives began investigating the case in December after the girl told her teacher of the molestations. The teacher notified Orange County social services officials, who brought in the police.
