Cal could have moved into second place in the Pac-10 with a victory.

After Oregon had taken a 72-68 lead on a pair of Brandon free throws with 14 seconds to play, Ryan Drew hit a three-pointer with three seconds left to cut Oregon’s lead to 72-71.

Cal had an opportunity to foul and get the ball back for one last shot. The Bears called a timeout but didn’t have any left, so a technical foul was called.

Kevin Mixon hit two free throws and Oregon retained possession.

Behind Brandon and Lucas, the Ducks stayed in front most of the way. But with just under five minutes left in the first half, Ryan Drew made a three-point basket, then scored on a breakaway dunk to tie the score at 23. Cal took its first lead since 2-0, when Hendrick, who had 11 first-half points, followed with a tip-in to put the Bears up, 25-23.

The first half ended tied at 27. With 14:06 remaining, Cal took a 44-37 lead on a layup by Bill Elleby.

Lyden then scored 15 of Oregon’s next 23 points to give the Ducks a 60-57 lead with 7:20 remaining. Oregon didn’t trail again in the game.

Lyden connected on six of eight field goal attempts in the second half and made four of seven three-point shots.
