Krickstein Advances by Default
Sixth-seeded Aaron Krickstein moved into the quarterfinals of the Milan Indoor ATP tennis tournament today when his French opponent, Thierry Champion, retired in the first set of their second-round match, saying he had become ill.
Champion trailed Krickstein 4-0 when he quit.
Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, the fifth seed, battled to a victory over Anders Jarryd 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.
In the third set, Jarryd made a string of mistakes while leading 4-2, failed to hold his serve and allowed Hlasek to make comeback.
In the first-round, Swede Jan Gunnarsson, a last-minute substitute for injured Paolo Cane, defeated Claudio Mezzadri of Switzerland 6-3, 6-3 and German Eric Jelen beat South African Christo van Rensburg 6-4, 6-2.
At Wellington, New Zealand, Australian junior Kristin Godridge defeated Belinda Cordwell of New Zealand 7-5, 6-4 today, continuing her run in the Fernleaf Classic.
Godridge beat third-seeded Mercedes Paz of Argentina in straight sets in the first round Tuesday.
