El Cajon
A dispute about driving tactics erupted into gunfire Wednesday morning, leaving one man hospitalized with a bullet in his back and another jailed on suspicion of attempted murder, authorities said.
The two motorists exchanged words while driving on California 67, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said. About 9:40 a.m. at a stoplight on Magnolia Street in El Cajon, the spokesman said, one driver left his vehicle and confronted the other motorist.
As he was walking back to his vehicle, the sheriff’s spokesman said, the second motorist fired at him once, dropping the victim to the pavement. The injured man, identified only as Richard Durkin, 32, was in guarded condition at Sharp Memorial hospital, authorities said.
The gunman immediately drove off, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Simeone Burkley, 45, of El Cajon later surrendered to El Cajon police, authorities said. He was booked into County Jail in downtown San Diego.
