Wide receiver Jerry Rice was named today as The Sporting News NFL Player of the Year, and offensive tackle Richmond Webb of the Miami Dolphins was the magazine’s choice as Rookie of the Year.

Rice, who also was selected to The Sporting News 1990 All-Pro team, tied an NFL record with five touchdown receptions Oct. 14 at Atlanta. In the same game, he set a team record with 13 catches for 225 yards.

Rice’s teammate, quarterback Joe Montana, was the magazine’s 1989 Player of the Year.

Webb became the first rookie tackle in NFL history selected to play in the Pro Bowl. The magazine’s previous Rookie of the Year honorees include Barry Sanders in 1989, Ottis Anderson in 1979 and Mike Ditka in 1961.
