BUENA PARK : Origin of Union Hall Fire Is Determined

Fire officials said they have determined the origin of the fire that gutted the United Food & Commercial Workers Union hall on Wednesday, but are still seeking its cause.

“We definitely know it started in an area 10 by 10 feet and above the ceiling,” said Fire Marshal Donald C. Tully. “Two suspect pieces of mechanical and electrical equipment were so damaged by the fire that we weren’t able to determine which of the two pieces of equipment the fire started in.”

The suspect equipment includes portions of an air conditioning unit and an air filtering system installed about two years ago.

Fire officials said they may recommend that the insurance company send those pieces of equipment to a specialized lab for further analysis.

Damage from the three-alarm fire, which took almost two hours to control, was estimated at $1.6 million, he said.
