NHL ROUNDUP : Flames Stop the Bruins’ Streak, 4-1

Brian MacLellan and Sergei Makarov scored less than two minutes apart late in the first period, and the Calgary Flames ended Boston’s seven-game home winning streak, 4-1, Thursday night at Boston.

The Flames, who moved to within four points of the Smythe Division-leading leading Kings, dominated the Adams Division leaders, outshooting the Bruins, 24-9, in the first two periods and 31-18 in the game.

Tim Hunter gave Calgary a 3-0 lead late in the second period before Graeme Townshend spoiled goalie Mike Vernon’s shutout bid with his second goal of the season in the third period.

Vancouver 2, Philadelphia 1--Troy Gamble turned away 36 shots as the Canucks beat the Flyers at Philadelphia for their third victory in 20 games (3-15-2).

It was the third consecutive defeat for the Flyers.

Vancouver scored first when Trevor Linden beat Philadelphia goaltender Ron Hextall at 6:51 of the opening period. Dan Quinn made it 2-0 on a power play at 9:55 of the third period.

Norm Lacombe beat Gamble at 14:33 of the third period.

Montreal 5, Quebec 1--Guy Carbonneau set up second-period goals by Mike McPhee and Russ Courtnall that broke a 1-1 tie, and the Canadiens rolled past the Nordiques at Quebec.

Andrew Cassels, Shayne Corson and Denis Savard had the other goals for the Canadiens, who rebounded from an 8-3 home-ice humiliation against Chicago on Wednesday night.

Alexei Gusarov scored his first NHL goal for Quebec, which is on a 1-8-2 skid.

Minnesota 4, Toronto 2--Brian Bellows had his fourth two-goal game in the last 3 1/2 weeks, giving him 299 goals in his career, as the North Stars defeated the Maple Leafs at Bloomington, Minn.

The North Stars, 5-2-1 in their last eight games, moved 11 points ahead of last-place Toronto in the Norris Division. Minnesota has four-game home winning streak for the first time since winning eight consecutive games in November, 1989.

Bellows has 12 goals in 14 games and 22 for the season, off his pace of a year ago, when he had 55.
