UCSD Runs Streak to 10 by Whipping Menlo

UC San Diego, ranked seventh among Division III schools, improved its school-record streak to 10 consecutive victories by beating Menlo College, 75-67, Friday night in men’s basketball at UCSD.

Tim Rapp led UCSD with 21 points, Rick Batt added 18 and Chris Moore came off the bench to score 10.

For Menlo, Rusty Newnan scored 23 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

UCSD improves to 18-3 and Menlo fell to 13-8.

Leading by two and threatening an upset at halftime, Point Loma Nazarene made just nine of 26 (34.6%) shots in the second half and fell to Fresno Pacific, 77-67, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game in front of 1,400 at PLNC.

TENNIS

Eleventh-ranked Tonya Fuller of University of San Diego fell to 15th-ranked Heather Willens of Stanford, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of the Rolex National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Minneapolis. The loss snapped Fuller’s (20-5) 11-match winning streak.

SDSU’s Dax Peterson and Jeff Belloli moved into today’s finals of the consolation doubles bracket by defeating David Ekerot and Donny Isaak of USC, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Monica Clancy and Sue Woodling were Point Loma Nazarene’s lone singles winners as the Crusaders were upended by visiting Long Beach State, 6-3, in a nonconference match.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Lisa Beaver had 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead UC San Diego to its 11th consecutive victory, 50-41, over Cal State San Bernardino in a nonconference game. Kathleen Alvarez added 15 points for the Tritons, who improved to 17-4.

PLNC stormed back from a 15-point halftime deficit to defeat visiting Fresno Pacific, 79-70, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Shannon Abrams led PLNC (18-6, 7-0) with 21 points and 14 rebounds, Camille Armijo added 18 points and Christy Stevens had 13.

BASEBALL

SDSU’s Tony Robertson led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a double, and with two outs scored on a single to center by Greg Quam, lifting the Aztecs to a 7-6 victory over Pacific at Smith Field.

Rick Page had two hits and three RBI’s and Mark Gapski (2-0) picked up his second victory. SDSU improved to 3-2; Pacific dropped to 1-3.

USD fell to 15th-ranked Pepperdine, 10-2, in a West Coast Conference opener at USD. Rick Doane hit a bases-empty homer in the seventh and drove in both of the Toreros’ runs. USD fell to 1-3-1. Pepperdine improved to 4-0.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Mike Schlegel and Eric Etebari paced the Aztecs to a three-game sweep over UC Santa Barbara in the opening day of matches in the Asics Grand Prix at Peterson Gym. SDSU (3-1) held UCSB (1-5) to just seven points in the first two games.
