Douglas C. Semmens, who practiced dentistry in Montrose and Lancaster, has died at his Lancaster residence. He was 71.

Semmens died Tuesday of heart failure, said his daughter, Kim Naville.

Born in Darjeeling, India, Semmens served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and was a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. In the mid-1950s, he opened his general dentistry practice in Montrose and 10 years later opened a second office in Lancaster. In the early 1980s, he sold both practices and retired. He was a member of several organizations, including the Crescenta-Canada Masonic Lodge No. 652, Sumola Shrine Club, Scottish Rite in Pasadena and Pasadena York Rite.

He is survived by his son, Brian Elliott of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughters Kim Naville and Sharon Semmens of Atlanta and Lynette Balzer of Miami; brother Bruce Semmens of Colorado, and three grandchildren.

A funeral is planned for 7 p.m. Monday at Crescenta-Canada Masonic Lodge, 2801 Montrose Ave. in La Crescenta. Burial will be in Georgia. Forest Lawn Mortuary in Glendale is handling the arrangements. Donations can be sent in Semmens’ name to Scottish Rite Childhood Learning Disorders, 150 N. Madison Ave., Pasadena 91101.
