8 Sites Identified for Quake-Safety Work

Share

The City Council has introduced seismic safety regulations to improve eight potentially hazardous, unreinforced masonry buildings in the Old Town area.

The buildings were constructed before seismic safety codes were enforced and do not have steel bars embedded in the walls. State law requires the city to identify the buildings and establish programs to reduce the earthquake hazards posed by the structures.

The program includes financial incentives for the buildings’ owners to help ease the cost of the renovations, which can range from $18,000 to $186,000 per building.

Incentives include community development block grants, waiver of fees for plan checks and building permit fees, and tax credits.
