Ben Johnson Wins Photo Finish in Japan
It took Ben Johnson 6.64 seconds to run 60 meters at an indoor track and field meet in Osaka, Japan, Monday. But he had to wait 30 minutes to find out that he had won. In Johnson’s fourth comeback race since his two-year suspension for steroid use was lifted last September, Johnson edged Andres Simon of Cuba in a photo finish.
“I was surprised,” Johnson said. “It was a very tight race. I thought he won.”
Simon led most of the race and raised his arms in a victory gesture after finishing. But meet officials ruled that although both runners crossed the line in the same time, Johnson’s torso reached it first.
