Thousands of grim law enforcement officers from throughout California today attended the funeral of Officer Tina Kerbrat, the first Los Angeles policewoman slain in the line of duty.

“Where’s Mommy?” asked Kerbrat’s 3-year-old daughter, Nicole, as the mahogany casket was carried into St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church.

“Are we going to go see Mommy die now?” the puzzled child asked.

Kerbrat, a rookie officer, was shot to death early Monday as she was getting out of her patrol car to question two men drinking beer on a street. Her partner shot and killed the gunman, Salvadoran immigrant Jose Amaya, 32.

“Tina lived with Christ and rose with him. May she live with him in eternal glory,” Archbishop Roger Mahony said as the funeral Mass began.

More than 3,500 mourners, mostly uniformed officers, filled the church and overflowed outside, said Bill Rivera, spokesman for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
