Douglass Takes Command in Wind
Dale Douglass, not bothered by wind gusts over 45 m.p.h., shot a 67 to take a four-stroke lead in the opening round of a senior golf tournament Friday.
Douglass had seven birdies and only two bogeys during his round, which featured some clutch putting. “I made three putts over 20 feet,” he said.
Lee Trevino, Terry Dill, J.C. Snead, Joe Jimenez, Bob Charles, Don January and George Lanning were tied for second at 71 at the Vineyards Golf and Country Club course. Quinton Gray, Jimmy Powell, Dave Hill and Harold Henning were at 72.
Charles, who won last week’s GTE Suncoast Classic at Tampa, said the wind made it tough to reach some of the longer par fours in two. “I try not to fight the wind,” he said. “I use the wind rather than fight it . . . You want to have good ball control in the wind.”
