Compton College Trustee Jane Astredo, 53, Dies of Cancer

Compton College Trustee Jane McCracken Astredo, 53, of Paramount died Monday of cancer.

Astredo, an elementary schoolteacher, became a member of the college board in 1979 and last year served as board president.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Warren A. Washington, president and superintendent of the Compton Community College District, said: “She gave generously of her time and herself . . . She will be deeply and sincerely missed by those of us who were privileged to know and work with her.”

Astredo was born in Fullerton in 1938. Her father, Ernest McCracken, served as mayor of Paramount and was also a trustee at Compton College.

Starting in 1974, Astredo taught at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Paramount. Before that, she was a librarian for the Paramount Unified School District. She received a PTA Continuing Service Award in 1976, as well as the March of Dimes Award of Merit in Education in 1987. She was a member of the Paramount Women’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Mexican-American Scholarship Assn.

She is survived by a son, Patrick; a daughter, Ane Miller; her mother, Anna McCracken; and a sister, Joyce Vaughn.

A service was scheduled Wednesday at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Paramount.
