Phone service for about 1,400 customers was cut Wednesday morning when a contractor severed an underground cable, Pacific Bell officials said.

With company repair crews working through the night, full service was expected to be restored early today, said Linda Bonniksen, a Pacific Bell spokeswoman.

The cable damage occurred about 8:30 a.m. when a contractor digging near Placentia Avenue and Victoria Street severed 90% of the underground cable, Bonniksen said, causing lines to immediately go dead.

The cable held about 1,500 Costa Mesa telephone lines, she said.

Once the extent of damage was discovered, crews went door to door to alert residents that their phones would not be reconnected until early this morning, Bonniksen said.

The security department for Pacific Bell will investigate whether the unidentified contractor violated regulations, Bonniksen said.
