About 20 people riding a Southern California Rapid Transit District bus witnessed a fatal shooting at a bus stop in the Palms area of Los Angeles, but the gunman got away.

The shooting was reported at the northwest corner of Venice and National boulevards about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, said Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells. As the bus pulled up to the stop, an estimated 20 passengers saw one man shoot another man once in the upper body with a handgun, said Police Detective Lt. Ross Moen.

The gunman ran east on Venice Boulevard, turned left onto National Boulevard and was last seen running down an alley, Moen said. The victim, estimated to be in his late 20s, died at Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, Moen said. The victim’s identity had not been confirmed.
