THOUSAND OAKS : Commission Rejects Addition to Center

The Thousand Oaks Planning Commission unanimously rejected a proposal to add two commercial buildings to Westlake Plaza Shopping Center.

Lack of parking and concern that the buildings would disrupt pedestrian and car traffic in the shopping center led the five-member commission to deny the project Monday.

A proposed 8,000-square-foot-building would have generated too much parking for the number of spaces available, and the proposed 7,500-square-foot-building would have eliminated the driveway between Townsgate and Agoura roads, Commission Chairman Andy Fox said. “The design just doesn’t work,” he said.

“I’m hoping they’ll come back to redesign it because I think the shopping center could stand an upgrade,” Commissioner Marilyn Carpenter said.

In an attempt to revitalize the 20-year-old shopping center, the developer, Trust Co. of the West, proposed adding the two buildings to the 15.75-acre property.

The developer has spent about $400,000 on the project and will appeal to the City Council, said Chuck Cohen, attorney for the company.
