PACIFIC 10 BASKETBALL : Arizona Retains Home Streak, Beating Stanford, 89-51
Chris Mills scored 22 points, Khalid Reeves scored 19 and No. 7 Arizona throttled Stanford’s offense, extending college basketball’s longest home winning streak to 62 games with an 89-51 victory Tuesday night.
The Wildcats (23-5, 11-3 in the Pacific 10) kept their three-game lead in the conference.
Stanford (14-12, 7-9) shot only 29%, making 20 of 69 shots. Arizona took its biggest lead, 84-42, on Casey Schmidt’s jump shot with 2:27 to go.
The Wildcats, who led by 16 points at halftime, tightened their grip by starting the second half with an 18-2 surge that included seven points by Mills.
Arizona led from the start and with strong interior defensive play dominated the rebounding.
Brian Williams and Ed Stokes broke up two passes intended inside for Stanford’s Adam Keefe and helped force 10 Cardinal turnovers in the first half.
Arizona also held the 6-foot-9 Keefe, who averaged 21.2 points coming in, to four points at intermission. He finished with 20.
The Wildcats jumped out on top, 8-2, as Mills made three-pointers around a 15-footer.
The 6-6 sophomore scored Arizona’s first 11 points, but Brent Williams’ jump shot pulled Stanford to 11-9 with 11:33 left in the half.
The Wildcats outscored Stanford, 19-5, over the next 6:37, with Reeves contributing seven points and Stokes six.
The victory was Arizona’s seventh in a row over Stanford.
