TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe Goes to the Pass, Heads Off Krishnan, 7-5, 6-3

Top-seeded John McEnroe relied largely on his passing shots to beat India’s Ramesh Krishnan, 7-5, 6-3, in a second-round match Wednesday night in the Volvo tournament at Chicago.

McEnroe next will face unseeded Alexander Mronz of Germany, a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 upset winner over eighth-seeded Gary Muller of South Africa.

Against Krishnan, McEnroe displayed a steady ground game, forcing his opponent to knock several returns over the end line.

McEnroe, serving as fast as 116 m.p.h., recorded 11 aces and seven service winners.

“It was a question of my hanging in there because I’ve always had difficulty against him,” McEnroe said. “It was slower for me in the beginning than I thought it would be, but I played well on the big points.”

Earlier, MaliVai Washington knocked off third-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and second-seeded Rich Reneberg advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory over David Pate.

Washington, a former University of Michigan star, recorded nine aces in the 86-minute match, serving up to 120 m.p.h.

Anders Jarryd of Sweden upset third-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round of the ABN Amro Indoor tournament at Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

In other second-round matches, Christian Bergstrom beat fellow Swede Magnus Larsson, 6-2, 7-5; Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia overcame Javier Sanchez of Spain, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, and seventh-seeded Jacob Hlasek of Switzerland defeated Ctislav Dosedel of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-4.

In first-round matches, top-seeded Ivan Lendl trounced Tom Nijssen of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-1, and Jan Siemerink beat fellow Dutchman Mark Koevermans, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Michael Chang, a loser to Andre Agassi in their first four meetings as professionals, defeated Agassi for the second consecutive time, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, in an exhibition match at the Forum before 10,397.
