MOORPARK : School Board OKs Members’ Stipend

Share

After discussing the issue of compensation for weeks, members of the Moorpark school board have voted 3 to 2 to give themselves a $200-a-month stipend.

Board member Sam Nainoa, who cast the swing vote Tuesday, said he voted for the stipend despite the prospect of belt-tightening by the district.

If all members of the board elect to take the stipend, the cost to the district will be $12,000 a year out of a $21-million budget.

While there has been little public comment about the stipend, Moorpark teachers have said the money could be put to better use with the possibility of an $800,000 shortfall of funds in 1991-92.

However, board President Cynthia Hubbard defended her vote for compensation because of the time that she takes off from work, often for another round of teacher salary negotiations.
