Steve DiTolla, Cal State Fullerton associate athletic director for business affairs since 1985, has been named the Titans’ interim athletic director, school President Milton A. Gordon announced Thursday.

DiTolla replaces Ed Carroll, who resigned two weeks ago to become UC Irvine’s assistant athletic director in charge of finance. Carroll starts his new job today.

Gordon said DiTolla, 34, will be the athletic director until a permanent appointment is made in July or August, but DiTolla said he will not pursue the permanent job.

“I have a clear understanding of what I’m getting into and the time I’ll be doing it, and I’ll do the best I can to serve the university in that period,” DiTolla said. “My job is to keep the department together, unify programs and move them forward as we embark on the most important thing we’ve ever done here, the (two-year, $2.3-million) fund-raising campaign.”

Gordon said DiTolla’s experience working with budgets gave him the edge over other interim athletic director candidates. Football Coach Gene Murphy was also considered for the position.

“With his knowledge, he can step in tomorrow and we won’t miss a beat,” Gordon said. “He’s done a lot with budgets.”

In his six years at Fullerton, DiTolla has been responsible for developing and administering the $4.9-million athletic budget, approving athletic department expenditures and supervising the business office, ticket office, marketing, promotions and home events.

He also was responsible for supervising four non-revenue sports: baseball, gymnastics, soccer and wrestling. DiTolla was instrumental in putting together the package that brought baseball Coach Augie Garrido from Illinois back to Fullerton last summer.

Before coming to Fullerton, DiTolla was accountant and director of promotions and marketing for the University of Colorado athletic department for five years (1980-85).
