Share

El Toro (28-0-2) vs. Simi Valley (24-2-1), Friday, 6 p.m.

Early in the season, El Toro Coach Kerry Krause told Simi Valley Coach Mark Johnson that their teams would meet in the final. Not a bad guess; a South Coast League team has made the finals every year since 1985. El Toro was the defending champion and Simi Valley, which lost to Capistrano Valley in the final two seasons ago, was ranked in the top 10 all year. El Toro, seeded No. 1, is led by Shawn Viloria, who has 39 goals and 13 assists, and advanced to the title game by outscoring three opponents, 16-0. The Chargers have shut out 21 opponents. Simi Valley, seeded third, is led by midfielders Amy Hunter, who has 17 goals, and Liz Albin, who has 16. The Pioneers have 18 shutouts, which ties a school record.

DIVISION 4-A BOYS

Santa Ana (20-6-2) vs. Beverly Hills (18-6-2), Friday, 8 p.m.

The Saints, the fourth-seeded team, are 13-2-1 since the first week in January. They are coming off a 1-0 overtime victory against No. 1-seeded Simi Valley. Gus Plasencia scored the game-winner with 30 seconds left in overtime. It was his 23rd goal of the season and his fifth in three playoff games. However, Santa Ana is not a one-man show. The Saints returned 10 starters this season, including forward Hector Perez and goalie Armando Guillen. Perez has 14 assists and Guillen has 10 shutouts. Beverly Hills, the second-place team from the Bay League, is a young team. The Normans start six juniors, including forward Matt Humiston, who has 25 goals and 14 assists. Sophomore goalie Doron Barness has eight shutouts, but credits sweeper Mike Rappaport for his success.

DIVISION 1-A BOYS

Newport Harbor (16-4-7) vs. Corona Centennial (17-4-3), Saturday, 4 p.m.

Newport Harbor, which finished third in the Sea View League, has overcome injuries to get this far. The Sailors lost their top scorer, Bryan Mallin (broken leg), and one of their top defenders, Mike Howard (torn ligaments), during league play. They also were without goalie Josh Klein (dislocated shoulder) for part of the season. Klein and Mark Hancock split time in goal, which has been an effective combination. Sweeper Todd Tift has been the backbone of the defense, while forwards Garrett Prott and Brannon Colucci have picked up the slack on offense. Centennial starts eight sophomores, but has matured quickly. Goalie Rusty Haller had three consecutive shutouts in the playoffs until Tuesday’s 4-3 victory over Saddleback. Rudy Tavares, Edgar Meza and Peter Medel have all scored nine goals for the Huskys.

DIVISION 2-A BOYS

El Dorado (16-9-2) vs. Bell Gardens (22-3-2), Saturday, 6 p.m.

It would seem natural to pick Bell Gardens, the fourth-seeded team. But El Dorado has been one of the surprise teams this season. A year ago, the Hawks failed to qualify for the playoffs. This season, with only two returning players, they were co-champions of the Empire League. Rodrigo Cid and Carlos Cedano lead a balanced attack. Cid has 15 goals and seven assists and Cedano has 14 goals and eight assists. Blayne Leitner is a big reason for the Hawks’ success. Only a sophomore, his aggressive play has saved El Dorado several times this season. Leitner has seven shutouts. Javier Maciel and Phillip Aguirre lead a high-scoring Bell Gardens attack. Maciel has scored 13 goals and Aguirre has nine. Bell Gardens has scored 16 goals in four playoff games.
