San Gabriel Valley Has an Identity Crisis--It Doesn’t Have One

Share

H.L. Mencken called Los Angeles 19 suburbs in search of a metropolis.

In that vein, the San Gabriel Valley Commerce and Cities Consortium is 10 cities and eight businesses in search of an image.

The consortium was born three years ago after a consultants’ study found that the San Gabriel Valley didn’t have a positive or negative image--it had no image.

The group is the first nationwide to market a cluster of cities, as opposed to individual cities or states, according to consortium Executive Vice President Richard Zimmer. Its first quarterly newsletter promoting the valley will be issued later this month. An economic conference is scheduled April 24 in the City of Industry.

The group’s plans were announced Friday in Alhambra. State Assemblyman Charles M. Calderon (D-Montebello) used the occasion to announce his strategy for an even stronger image. Calderon said he wants the region to pull away from Los Angeles County to form a separate San Gabriel Valley County.
