PREP BASKETBALL BOYS’ STATE SOUTHERN REGIONAL : Poway Surprises Manual Arts, 72-68

Manual Arts, the City 4-A Division runner-up, was upset by Poway, 72-68, Tuesday night in the opening round of the Division I Southern California Regional State boys’ basketball tournament.

Before a standing-room only crowd of 1,500 at Poway, the Titans became only only the second San Diego Division I school to advance beyond the first round of the State tournament. They will play top-seeded Fremont Thursday night at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Poway (21-6) was led by 6-foot-7 junior Kyle Milling, who scored 23 points and had 23 rebounds. Junior Todd Fortney made four of five free throws in the final 26 seconds to give the Titans a 70-68 lead.

Manual Arts (23-5) was led by Dwain Bradberry’s 22 points.

Long Beach Jordan 60, Westchester 57-- Using an up-tempo game, the Panthers (24-6) outlasted the Comets (22-8) in a Division I game at Long Beach City College.

After trailing by nine with 4:39 remaining, Westchester closed the deficit to 59-57 with 20 seconds to play.

Jordan’s Marlon Hamilton then made one free throw, and the Comets’ chance to tie disappeared when Albert Jones’ three-point attempt was long.

LeRoi O’Brien led Westchester (22-8) with 17 points. Darryl Bryant paced Jordan with 14 points, and Rodney Harris added 11.

Fremont 77, Long Beach Millikan 59--The top-seeded Pathfinders (32-1) were tied, 35-35, at halftime, but broke away in the second half to win the Division I game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Fremont outscored Millikan (24-6), 21-13, in the third quarter to take control. Guard Chris Ford led Fremont with 18 points.

Artesia 61, Riverside North 45--DeAndre Austin scored 18 points, Andre Jones 17 and Charles O’Bannon 15 for Artesia (27-2) in a Division II game at Gahr High.

Tustin 91, Visalia Redwood 49--Brian Reider scored 16 points and David Beilstein added 15 and every player scored for the top-seeded Tillers in a Division II game at Tustin.

Reider had 10 points and Beilstein nine in the first half for Tustin (27-4), the Southern Section II-AA champions.

Servite 69, Tulare Western 66--Adam Anderson scored 23 points and made a key steal late in the game to lift the Friars in a Division III game at Servite.

Servite (24-6), the defending State champion, led by as many as 10 points in the second half. But Western (15-13) rallied behind Andre Galston, who scored nine of his 15 points in the second half.

Ryan Dodd made two free throws and Matt Kenney one to clinch the victory.

Santa Monica St. Monica 73, Lindsay 52--Sophomore guard Alex Davis scored 22 points to lead the Mariners to a Division IV victory at St. Monica High.

Senior guard Keith Walk-Green added 17 points and nine rebounds for St. Monica (19-8). The Mariners took control quickly, leading, 38-29, at halftime. Lindsay finished 22-6.

Santa Clara 76, Clairemont 44--Chris Cole and Art Barron each scored 15 points and Isaiah Mustafa added 14 as host Santa Clara (26-4) routed Clairemont (12-13) in a Division IV game.
