SWIMMING / PACIFIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS : Backstroker Rouse, Making Comeback, Is Double Winner
Since February, a broken left wrist has limited Jeff Rouse to nothing but kicking. Surprisingly, there have been no adverse effects as the Stanford junior proved Friday night with two victories in meet-record times at the Pacific 10 Championships at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.
Swimming all but 10 yards under water, Rouse posted an amazing 21.84 backstroke leg to give the Cardinal the lead in the 200-yard medley relay. He was followed by breaststroker Tyler Mayfield, butterflyer Bill Schell and freestyle anchor Erik Maurer, who picked up his fourth gold medal of the meet when he touched first in 1:27.92.
“I had no idea I’d be able to swim this fast,” Rouse said. “I haven’t taken a stroke in five weeks.”
Rouse also won the 100-yard backstroke in 47.77.
With four of his teammates also placing in the finals of the six-man fields, Stanford scored 81 points in the event, boosting its two-day total to 621.5 points.
The Cardinal also got a first in the 100 breaststroke, which was won by Mayfield, a freshman from Las Vegas, in 54.44, and got a third and a fourth in the 200 freestyle.
On the strength of its breast-strokers and butterflyers, UCLA moved into second-place with 414.5 points. California is third with 358, followed by USC (355.5), Arizona State (325), Arizona (275) and Washington (155.5).
