Phil Nevin's two-run homer capped a four-run seventh inning that helped Cal State Fullerton defeat Iowa State, 6-3, in a nonconference baseball game Saturday at Amerige Park in Fullerton.
With Fullerton (10-11) trailing, 3-2, Mike Berry led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and scored after singles by Steve Sisco and Frank Herman. Sisco scored on an error, and then Nevin homered.
In another nonconference baseball game:
San Diego State 3, UC Irvine 2 (10 innings)--The Aztecs (12-6) scored on a two-out error in the ninth to tie the score, and won on Scott Dennison's bases-loaded single. Irvine is 10-12.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:
Chapman 12, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 2--Doug Yates had four hits, four RBIs and scored twice for host Chapman (8-13, 4-4). Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is 10-10, 4-4.
In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:
Christ College Irvine 11-6, Point Loma Nazarene 5-4--Mike Adams (5-0) was the winning pitcher and added three hits and three RBIs for host Christ College Irvine. Paul Weldon had three hits and three RBIs for CCI (11-6, 2-0) in the second game.
In the third place game of the National Christian College Athletic Assn. Tournament (Division II):
Pacific Christian 67, Philadelphia College of the Bible 42--Candy Almond scored 19 points, Donna Allen 15 and Gina Atkins 14 for PCC (18-16). In men's track and field:
UC Irvine sweeps--Host UC Irvine defeated UC Santa Barbara, 88-75, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 104-55, in a double-dual meet at UC Irvine. Junior Matt Farmer won the long (23 feet 9 1/2 inches) and triple jumps (48-8).
In women's track and field:
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo sweeps--Cal Poly San Luis Obispo defeated UCI, 73-71, and Santa Barbara, 85-55, in a double dual meet at Irvine. UCI defeated Santa Barbara, 109-35. Buffy Rabbit qualified for the NCAA meet by winning the 5,000 meters in 16 minutes 36.89 seconds.
