Walnut : Street Vendor Ban Studied

Share

Street-corner vendors who sell such items as flowers, wall decorations and car-seat covers could soon find their operations prohibited in Walnut.

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, some merchants complained that their businesses were being hurt by the roadside operations, which obtain one-day licenses from the city.

In addition, the merchants said street sales tarnish the image of Walnut, making it look like a “scattered swap meet.”

“I don’t want to see Walnut end up with hand-painted pictures of Elvis on velvet” on street corners, said Andy Petrell, owner of The Daisy Florist on Lemon Avenue.

Mayor Ray T. Watson directed the city staff to investigate the possibility of prohibiting street-corner sales.
