ROUNDUP : James Madison Erases Deficit, Then Holds Off No. 1 Penn State

Jeanine Michealsen blocked a three-point shot at the buzzer, preserving James Madison’s 73-71 upset of No. 1 Penn State Saturday at State College, Pa., in the second round of East Regional.

The Dukes (26-4) trailed, 11-0, after the game’s first 4 1/2 minutes and were behind, 41-29, at halftime before coming back.

They outscored Penn State, 18-6, in the first seven minutes of the second half--while Atlantic 10 player of the year Susan Robinson was on the bench with three fouls--to tie the score at 47.

James Madison took a 62-54 lead on back-to-back short jump shots by Michealsen. Penn State (29-2) came back to tie twice and was within 73-71 in the game’s final minute.

After a missed shot by James Madison with 20 seconds to play, Penn State rebounded and Tanya Garner, a 5-foot-7 guard, attempted a last-second three-point shot. But Michealsen, 5-10, blocked it.

Vicki Harris had 18 points to lead James Madison. Garner scored 24 points for Penn State.

Karen Deden scored 14 of her 19 points during the first half as 12th-ranked Washington started the game with a 10-0 run and finished with a 70-53 victory over No. 23 Iowa in a West Regional game at Seattle. The Hawkeyes (21-9) fell behind, 20-4, and never recovered against the Huskies (24-4).

In a West Regional game at Athens, Ga., No. 3 Georgia beat No. 17 Nevada Las Vegas, 86-62, as Stacy Ford scored 32 points for the Lady Bulldogs (27-3). Vicki Lander had 22 points for UNLV. Georgia will play Cal State Long Beach Wednesday night in Las Vegas.

Clemson’s Jackie Farmer set an East Regional record by grabbing 29 rebounds as the Lady Tigers (21-10) beat Providence, 103-91, at Clemson, S.C.

Deadra Charles had 25 points, 22 rebounds and five blocked shots in leading Tennessee (26-5) to a 55-47 victory over Southwest Missouri State in a Mideast Regional game at Knoxville, Tenn.

Rhonda Mapp scored 27 points to lead North Carolina State (27-5) to a 94-83 victory over George Washington in an East Regional game at Raleigh, N.C.
