PREP ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Pitchers Combine for No-Hitter

Rae Rice and Brigit Thackeray combined on a no-hitter as Fountain Valley defeated Edison, 7-0, in a Sunset League softball game Friday at Fountain Valley.

Rice (4-0) had 12 strikeouts in five perfect innings. The perfect game ended when Thackeray issued a one-out walk in the seventh.

Rice also had two hits and a run batted in. Kristen Santa Cruz had a two-run single for Fountain Valley (7-1, 2-0 in league). Edison is 0-9, 0-1.

In another Sunset League softball game:

Westminster 2, Marina 1--Andrea Doty (3-1) pitched a three-hitter for host Westminster (4-2, 1-0), which used five first-inning walks to score twice.

In Garden Grove League softball:

Garden Grove 4, La Quinta 0--Kim Taylor pitched a one-hitter, striking out five and walking three, and Kelly White doubled in two runs in the fifth inning for host Garden Grove (6-3, 2-0). Stephanie Mareina had an RBI single for Garden Grove.

In Olympic League softball:

Ayala 11, Orange Lutheran 1--Julie Mangels had one hit and one RBI for host Orange Lutheran (1-3, 0-1).

In Empire League golf:

El Dorado 218, Loara 242--Erik Wolf shot a one-under-par 34 for El Dorado at Western Hills. In nonleague golf:

Valencia 441, Los Amigos 489--Kyle Kersten and James Lee each shot 12-over 84 for Valencia (4-2) at Alta Vista.

In Angelus League boys’ tennis:

Santa Margarita 13, Mater Dei 5--Sean Crafts and Jeff Larson won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1; Greg Warrington and Jed Siacor won, 6-2, 7-5, 6-1, and Teo Riscuez and Kent Policky won, 7-5, 7-5, 7-6, as Santa Margarita (5-3, 2-1) swept in doubles at Coda Valley.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 11, Irvine 7--Vince Cheng and Todd Blum won, 6-1, 6-3, 6-0, for visiting Mission Viejo (6-4, 1-0).

In South Coast League tennis:

Dana Hills 17, El Toro 1--Kurt Bruggeman swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and George Saba swept, 6-1, 6-0, for visiting Dana Hills (8-0, 1-0).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Costa Mesa 10, Western 8--Son Dang and Tuong Nguyen won the last set, 6-3, in doubles to clinch the match for host Costa Mesa. Dang and Nguyen split their other two sets, 6-2, 3-6. Also in doubles, Vinh Dinh and Son Nguyen swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, and Binh Nguyen and Back Pham won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, for Costa Mesa (6-2). James Yu swept, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5, for Western (5-3) to improve to 23-1 for the season.

Valencia 10, Santiago 8--Evans Hargous swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, for host Valencia (4-2).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Villa Park 89, Sunny Hills 78--Michelle Morris won the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute 2.8 seconds and the 200 freestyle (2:02.7), and Catherine Pharris won the 500 freestyle (5:26.93) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.6) for Villa Park (4-0).

In Sunset League boys’ volleyball:

Huntington Beach 3, Santa Ana 0--Ian Adam had 20 assists and Byron Aguas had five kills for visiting Huntington Beach (7-0, 3-0), which won, 15-5, 15-13, 17-15.

In nonleague volleyball:

Estancia 3, Foothill 1--Matt Fuerbringer had 33 kills for host Estancia (2-5) in a 15-8, 15-5, 15-17, 15-12 victory.

Calvary Chapel Santa Ana 3, El Dorado 0--Chris Kingery had 10 kills for host Calvary Chapel in a 15-2, 15-2, 15-5 sweep.
