COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Northridge Scores in Ninth to Beat UCI

Cal State Northridge scored twice in the ninth inning to beat UC Irvine, 3-1, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Irvine.

Each team scored in the eighth and Northridge had runners on second and third with one out in the ninth when Denny Vigo singled off Chris Huber (4-4) to drive in both runs. Huber pitched a seven-hitter with no walks and nine strikeouts.

He was outdone by Northridge’s Craig Clayton (6-2), a junior from Loara High School. He pitched a five-hitter with two walks and nine strikeouts. The only run he allowed was unearned.

With two outs in the eighth, Irvine’s Ray Walker reached second on a throwing error by second baseman Scott Richardson. Joe Furukawa followed with a ground ball to Richardson that he threw into the dugout for a two-base error, allowing Walker to score.

Clayton, who also bats lead-off, had his 21-game hitting streak stopped. Irvine (13-14) travels to Northridge (20-9) for a game at 1 p.m. today.

In another nonconference baseball games:

Cal State Fullerton 20, Cal Lutheran 3--Frank Charles had two doubles and three RBIs and scored twice and Steve Sisko had two doubles and a triple, scored three runs and had two RBIs for the Titans (15-12) at Amerige Park in Fullerton.

Mark Shimamoto, a senior second baseman, had his first career RBI on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to give the Titans their final run.

Southern California College 8, Montclair (N.J.) State 6--Sean Maharg had a two-run single in the fifth inning to give host SCC a 6-5 lead. Donny Harrell and Keith Laszlo hit home runs on consecutive pitches in the seventh for SCC (12-10).

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 6, Oregon 3--Roseann Alva defeated Hilary Roberts 1-6, 6-0, 6-2, in No. 1 singles and Fullerton won the top four singles matches. Alva teamed up with Kelli Moore to win, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, in doubles for host Fullerton (6-10).

In the Bakersfield softball tournament:

Portland State 5, Chapman 3 (10 innings)--Trina Homea had two hits, including a double and scored for Chapman. Jackie Blake (12-1) pitched a five-hitter, walked three and had 12 strikeouts in her first loss of the season for Chapman (23-5).

Sonoma State 1, Chapman 0 (8 innings)--Losing pitcher Sherri Schreck (11-3) gave up three hits and struck out eight. Jackie Blake had two hits for Chapman, which had 10 hits.
