SWIMMING NCAA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS : Fetter Leads Texas Victory; Stanford Second

Leigh Ann Fetter won the 100-yard freestyle for the third consecutive year to help defending champion Texas win its seventh team title in eight years in the NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships Saturday.

Fetter, who won the 50 freestyle Thursday and also was on three winning relay teams, won the 100 freestyle with a personal-best 48.29 seconds.

Texas finished with a record 746 points to 653 for runner-up Stanford. Florida was next at 353 as the Lady Gators finished in the top three for the 10th consecutive year.

The Lady Longhorns moved into the lead for good by placing three swimmers in the top six of the night’s second event, the 200 backstroke, which was won by Texas freshman Beth Barr.

Stanford freshman Summer Sanders, named the NCAA swimmer of the year, set her third NCAA record in as many nights, clocking 1:54.17 in the 200-yard butterfly. The mark of 1:54.52 was set by Mary T. Meagher in 1988.

Sanders earlier set records in the 200 and 400 individual medleys. Her time of 4:05.19 in the 400 was the second-fastest ever.

Stanford teammate Janet Evans was unchallenged in winning the 1,650 freestyle for the second year. Her time was 15:45.98, about seven seconds slower than her American record.
