For the first time in his high school career, Mira Mesa senior Mike Bovee found himself on the losing side of a pitching effort, Tuesday in the Upper Deck Classic, at Esperanza High in Anaheim.

Despite two-run homers by the Marauders’ Brendan Hause and Lee McAfee, Mira Mesa (8-1) dropped its first high school baseball game of the season and its first-round game to highly regarded Fountain Valley, 5-4.

Bovee entered the game with sound credentials. Backing him up was top-ranked and defending 3-A San Diego Section champion Mira Mesa, also ranked third nationally by USA Today. He also had a 0.00 ERA through 12 innings and 12-0 high school record in hand.
