A fire late Tuesday night caused extensive damage to a Newport Beach restaurant, authorities said.

The 10:56 p.m. blaze occurred at John Dominis Restaurant at 2901 W. Coast Highway, near Riverside Avenue. Fire officials did not immediately know the cause of the fire.

Derek Campbell, a valet at the nearby Villa Nova Restaurant, saw the smoke and came outside shortly after 11 p.m.

“The whole front of the roof was on fire,” he said.

Firefighters from six engine and two truck companies battled the fire in the midst of a downpour. It took 45 minutes to contain, officials said.

Newport Beach Fire Capt. Larry Parrish said the “fire damage was to the roof . . . there’s lots of interior damage from all the water.”

Police set up flares and closed Coast Highway to traffic for more than an hour.
