COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Boyd Pitches No-Hitter as Titans Sweep Pomona
Tiffany Boyd pitched a no-hitter and a three-hitter as Cal State Fullerton swept a nonconference softball doubleheader with Cal Poly Pomona Thursday at Pomona.
Boyd’s no-hitter helped Fullerton (32-5) to a 4-0 victory in the first game. The fourth-ranked Titans had to go 10 innings in the second game to win, 4-1. Boyd improves to 19-2.
Pomona (13-23) had a 1-0 lead after six innings in the second game, but Fullerton tied the score, 1-1, on consecutive singles by Mich DeBree, Joy Tiner and Kelly Hunt. Fullerton scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning as Pomona committed two errors.
In the Anteater men’s tennis tournament:
Top-seeded teams advance--USC defeated Northeast Louisiana, 6-0, to advance in the first round of the tournament at UC Irvine. USC’s Byron Black, ranked eighth in the nation in singles, beat Johan Hammerquist in three sets to clinch the sweep.
Harvard, Irvine and Mississippi, the second-, third- and fourth-seeded teams, each advanced. The Anteaters (12-4) beat Brown, 6-0, to win for the seventh time in their past eight matches. Irvine’s Mike Roberts, ranked No. 33 nationally, beat John Abbey, 6-0, 6-3.
