COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Canyons Erases 6-Run Deficit, Beats Hancock in 10 Innings

College of the Canyons rallied from a six-run deficit and emerged with a 10-8 victory in 10 innings over host Hancock in the first round of the Hancock baseball tournament Thursday.

Robert Barena hit a two-out single to drive in two runs and break an 8-8 tie. Barena reached base five times on a single, two walks, a double and an error.

The Cougars will meet Cypress in a semifinal game today at Hancock College at 2:30 p.m.

Playing their first game in 12 days, the Cougars (11-10-1) fell behind, 7-1, after four innings. But Canyons clawed back with two runs in both the fifth and eighth innings to close to 7-5.

Three runs in the top of the ninth gave Canyons an 8-7 lead, the big blow being a two-run single by catcher Richard Avalos.

Hancock tied the score, 8-8, in the bottom half of the inning.

Shawn Bowen (2-1), the fourth Canyons pitcher, picked up the win. Bowen struck out three after entering the game in the ninth and retired the side in order to end the game.

Mission 10, Compton 2: Eddie Chavez went three for four with a solo home run to lead visiting Mission College to a Southern California Athletic Conference victory over Compton.

Harold Whiteside added two hits and drove in a run for Mission (11-15, 3-6 in conference play).

Mt. San Jacinto 5, Moorpark 1--Chad Radomski was two for three and singled in the only run for Moorpark (10-13) in a Channel Coast tournament game at Moorpark.
