A sewage leak that has poured more than 3 million gallons of sewage into the San Diego River near the eastern end of Mission Valley will not be repaired until later this week, county health authorities said Monday.

The spill, discovered Saturday, is caused by a missing section in a sewer pipe in the 5600 block of Adobe Falls Road, said Dan Avera, a spokesman for the county Department of Health Services. The section may have been washed away during recent heavy rains.

The sewage is entering the river near the foot of Rainier Avenue, a popular fishing area, Avera said, and flowing down the river and into the ocean at Dog Beach. Signs warning of contamination have been posted at both sites.

The city will begin repairs on the main later this week, as soon as equipment can be brought in to build an access road to the pipe, Avera said.
