Whittier : School Board Won’t Spend $20,000 to Challenge Vote
The Whittier Union High School District will not challenge the results of the March 5 bond issue election, officials announced recently.
The $75-million bond issue fell 22 votes shy of the necessary two-thirds majority, getting 66.5% of the votes. The final tally was 6,667 in favor and 3,362 opposed.
“We talked to a couple of different law firms and campaign consultant people, and it didn’t look like it was close enough,” Assistant Supt. Lowell Shira said. A recount could have cost the district as much as $20,000 in a tight budget year, he said. The school board already voted this month to cut 33 jobs before next year to save $1.3 million.
