The perennial family favorite “The Sound of Music” will echo through the Oxnard Civic Auditorium for six performances starting April 12.

Cabrillo Music Theater, with a cast of more than 60, will attempt to bring alive the rolling Austrian hills and the story of Maria Rainer as she brings music and other simple joys to the Von Trapp family.

Maria, the role made famous by Julie Andrews, will be played by Thousand Oaks resident Rebecca Hanes.

“Rebecca has a lovely voice and portrays Maria’s enthusiasm for life wonderfully,” said producer Mary Ann McAfee.

Musical accompaniment will be provided by an orchestra composed of 19 professional musicians. Featured are such classics as “The Sound of Music,” “Do-Re-Me” and “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.”

Tickets are expected to sell briskly.

“Since this production is so popular with families,” McAfee said, “we’ve added an extra matinee.”

Show times are 8 p.m. April 12, 17 and 18; 2 and 8 p.m. April 13 and 14. Tickets are $12.50, $15 and $17. Discounts are offered to groups of 20 or more, senior citizens, students and military personnel. The auditorium is at 800 Hobson Way, Oxnard. For more information, call 483-8859.
