COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton’s Bailey, Robinson Shut Down Pacific

Jack Bailey and Chris Robinson combined on a five-hitter as Cal State Fullerton defeated University of the Pacific, 3-1, in a Big West Conference baseball game Friday at Amerige Park in Fullerton.

Bailey (4-1) allowed three hits, including a seventh-inning home run to Keith Johnson (his seventh) to cut the Fullerton lead to 2-1. He had six strikeouts. Robinson allowed two hits and had two strikeouts to record his fifth save.

Matt Hattabaugh hit his second home run and also had an RBI double for Fullerton (18-15, 3-1 in conference). Phil Nevin also had an RBI single for Fullerton. Joe Brownholtz (4-4) allowed nine hits in eight innings to take the loss for Pacific (12-19, 0-4).

In other Big West Conference baseball:

Fresno State 4, UC Irvine 1--Bobby Jones (8-1) pitched a two-hitter, struck out nine, walked two, allowed just one earned run and retired the last 13 batters for visiting Fresno State. Chris Falco had three hits and two RBIs for Fresno (22-11, 4-0). Chris Huber (4-5) allowed nine hits, struck out five and walked one in taking the loss and Joe Furukawa had both hits and scored for Irvine (17-18, 1-3)

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 3-9, Pacific 1-0--Tiffany Boyd won her 11th consecutive game for the fourth-ranked Titans (36-7, 12-2). Boyd allowed one hit in five innings and struck out six in the second game.

In the first game, Ann Van Dortrecht pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine. Fullerton will play No. 2 Fresno State in a double-header at 1 p.m. today at the Titan softball complex.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, University of San Diego 2--Brett Hansen-Dent upset Jose Luis Noriega to lead the 13th-ranked Anteaters (15-5). Hansen-Dent defeated Noriega, the nation’s 10th-ranked singles player, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Hansen-Dent then teamed with Carsten Hoffman in doubles to defeat Noriega and Kevin Bradley, 3-6, 7-6, 7-2.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Fresno State 2--Kelly Goldsborough won 6-3, 6-2, Biljana Korac won, 6-3, 7-6, Stacey Cadigan won, 6-2, 6-1, Ali Yoshimoto won, 6-0, 6-2, and Jennifer Mazgerdian, won 6-2, 6-2, in singles for visiting UC Irvine (12-9).
