COLD AS ICE: Despite all the hype...

COLD AS ICE: Despite all the hype and hoopla certain albums received when they were released a couple of months ago, the results haven’t been very impressive. In fact, it’s been a bad spring for some big names in pop music. The worst belly-flop so far? How about David Lee Roth, once a sure-fire Top 10 contender, whose “A Little Ain’t Enough” album has lived up to its name, plummeting to No. 87 after only 10 weeks on the Billboard chart. Susanna Hoffs’ “When You’re a Boy,” her first post-Bangles solo effort, is also a major dud for Columbia Records, dropping way down to No. 120 after eight weeks. Robert Palmer’s “Don’t Explain” album has been a loser for EMI, rattling around at a lowly No. 114 after 19 weeks in competition, with its most recent single, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology),” stalling at No. 17 on the singles chart. Even Hollywood Records has to be a little disappointed about Queen’s much-ballyhooed comeback album. Despite throwing a $150,000 party for the aging rocksters, Hollywood hasn’t been able to push the album into the Top 10--its at No. 41 after only seven weeks. Meanwhile, no one’s happy at Columbia Records, which was hoping for a hit-single jump start from “High Wire” for its Rolling Stones live album. Instead, the single has taken a dive, dropping to No. 60 after only four weeks.
